What I Offer

  • 1.5-2 hour session incorporating information about how we breathe mechanically, taking in anatomy, physiology and general practicalities for different instruments. No prior knowledge is required, and a practical element is included.

This session is not specifically for wind and brass players, and is also not only based on the Buteyko Method. It is designed to show how we can best use our breathing systems to influence our nervous systems, and the positive impact this could have on injury prevention.

  • Did you know how many symptoms your workforce could be experiencing, simply by breathing poorly? Learn from someone whose business it is to breathe well! Katy’s chatty yet informative workshops provide the background information and knowledge to your employees to help them use simple techniques to potentially transform their lives. The information is robust and evidence based, but the workshops are lighthearted and practical, designed to show how breathing interacts with our other body systems. It will deliver plenty of information, but also practical exercises for people to try at work and at home, potentially helping alleviate a number of health issues in a simple and cheap way, with no side effects!

  • Buteyko work in primary schools has been shown to reduce absences, and improve health and concentration levels.

How, as teachers, can you apply some of these basic techniques in your primary school? (1 hr)

  • Course of 5 sessions. Generally all work is covered in 5 sessions, over the course of around 6 weeks. It requires commitment from the client in the form of practising for 20 minutes 3 times a day.

  • “I had four breathing sessions with Katy and found them extremely productive and useful for the issues that I was experiencing. Before I had these sessions, I was experiencing lots of anxiety, reflux and the inability to take a solid breath, something which was important as a brass musician. After doing a week of the Buteyko sets I noticed that all of this started to reduce instantly and took control of my anxiety. Having done four weeks’ worth of Buteyko I have found that a lot of these symptoms have basically vanished and am feeling generally a lot healthier and more in control of my breathing. Katy was very clear in all of my sessions and would send me follow up emails to keep me filled in with what I had to do to keep on top of everything, I found this very useful.”

  • “Katy, you really do know how to tailor and adapt Buteyko to suit the client. This is a real strength of yours and something that does not always come naturally to a teacher so very well done to you.”

    Course Leader, Buteyko Breathing Association.

  • “Enlightening, a presentation that all wind players wanting to better themselves should take in.”

    - Alan Thomas, Trumpet, RAF, Former Principal Trumpet, CBSO and BBCSO.

  • “ The material and level was all well chosen in relation to the audience, and the fact that so many of them were able to answer the majority of the background info was testament to this. Structuring the session so that it ended with a practical element was certainly a great positive in that the students were able to witness and experience everything that you had been talking about in action.”

    - Murray Greig, Head of Brass, Royal Northern College of Music.
